Catherines Cafe Restaurant is one of the most popular places to dine in English Harbour. This French-inspired beachside restaurant is know for its relaxed atmosphere, quality food and drinks and best in class service. Nestled into the corner of sailor’s paradise, Pigeon Point Beach, and surrounded by tropical greenery, you could almost miss this must visit gem.
Catherines Cafe offers a wide variety of French-inspired dishes with a beach vibe twist to them. They pride themselves in supporting the local economy as much as possible by sourcing ingredients from local farmers, fishermen and artisan food producers.
Catherines Café was number ranked number 48 on Caribbean Journal’s 50 Best Restaurants in the Caribbean – 2024 list.
Depending on the vibe you’re going for, you can relax on the beach, ordering lighter bites off the beach menu or opt in for a more fine-dining experience within the restaurant. Alternatively, the staff are very accommodating so if it’s not too busy you can usually opt for both, starting with a fine-dining lunch and then moving to the beach for drinks and lighter bites for the rest of the day.
When it comes to drinks, the Rocks Group (Sheer Rocks, Catherines Cafe, Rokuni and Roquita) make some of, if not the best, cocktails in Antigua & Barbuda. With cocktails made from top quality liquors and supplementary ingredients, a keen attention to detail and long standing bartenders who take pride in their craft, you’ll be hard pressed to find a cocktail that you don’t enjoy on their menu. Not to be overshadowed, is the fantastically curated wine selection. Owner Alex Grimley and his senior team are constantly traveling the world in search of wines that can enhance each guests’ experience. If Alex happens to be in the restaurant whilst you’re visiting and you fancy seeing what true passion looks like, just pull him aside and ask him to talk you through some of his wine choices.
Depending on the time of the year, Catherines Cafe Restaurant may offer packaged deals such as Day Passes which may include a spot on the day beds, grazing board, a selection of cocktails/bottle of wine and complimentary towels, etc.
With the open concept dining and smooth transition from decking to beach, Catherines Cafe Restaurant gives you a true luxury tropical paradise feel. From the moment you walk in you’ll receive non stop smiles and attentiveness from all of the staff. A combination of the inviting sounds of the ocean and complimentary playlist will put you in a place of pure relaxation. However, regardless of the fine dining environment Catherines Cafe is built for fun and enjoyment, with sandy feet, salty hair and moving hips welcomed and encouraged.
On Saturday afternoons, Catherines Cafe Restaurant is usually pretty lively, with a live band playing on the beach from around 2 till 6. Most times you can expect to see both guests an staff dancing through the restaurant.
Like it’s sister/brother restaurant Sheer Rocks, Catherines Cafe leans on the more expensive side in regards to dining in Antigua and Barbuda. However, you do have the option of reducing your food bill by opting for the beach menu over the fine-dining lunch. So that you don’t encounter any surprises, you may want to check their menus, with prices available, on their website.
It’s worth noting that beds and lounge chairs are free for paying customers to use, with no minimum spend.
Catherines Cafe Restaurant is a very popular spot. However, with it being open all day, there are many opportunities to enjoy the space at quieter times if that’s what you’re looking for. Additionally, whilst you are likely to get a table by wondering in, I would certainly advise that you reserve a spot ahead of time, especially if you are with a large group.
Access to Catherines Cafe is quite easy. You can either park or be dropped off by the main entrance or stroll in from the beach side. For those who are less stable on their feet or require wheelchair access, the front entrance is your best bet, with a wheelchair friendly walkway to the restaurant.
If you’re looking for the best experience at Catherines Cafe Restaurant, I’d recommend you get your self booked in on a Saturday afternoon so that you can enjoy the live bands and energetic audience. With drinks readily flowing you can find the venue getting livelier as the day progresses.
As mentioned earlier, the restaurant tries to support the local economy by sourcing from local fishermen, etc. For that reason I’d recommend asking what the local fish options are as there is a high chance they would have likely been caught that very day.
In regards to drinks, if you are a lover of pina coladas, I would highly recommend trying the Rocks Colada. Infused with Barbuda sea salt, this is definitely one of the top pina coladas you will find in Antigua. And to answer your question, no, not all pina coladas are made equal haha.
To try to help sustain certain marine species around Antigua and Barbuda, bans are put in place at points in the year to stop the fishing and sale of said species. I mention this as you may not find lobster or conch available depending on when you visit Sheer Rocks Restaurant.
