Overview

Kon Tiki Floating Bar is exactly what the name suggests, a small open-air bar floating just off the south end of Dickenson Bay Beach, Antigua. Reach it by short shuttle and settle into a laid back, rustic chic set up that prioritises island atmosphere over top shelf showmanship, think sea breeze, sun, music and cold drinks on the water. It’s an easy add-on to a Dickenson Bay beach day, a fun meeting point for friends, and a unique stop for first-timers who want to say they’ve had a drink on a floating bar in Antigua.

Food and Drinks

Kon Tiki keeps it simple behind the bar: cold cocktails, chilled beer and a sensible glass of wine if you are not in a tropical mood. Think more island vibe than mixology show. No rush here, just pace yourself and let the view do the heavy lifting.

Atmosphere

Most days feel relaxed yet sociable with music, sea breeze and people drifting in from Dickenson Bay beach. On certain days it can get pretty lively, especially when cruise visitors are around.

Price

Given that you’re literally on a floating bar in the middle of the Caribbean sea, prices are very reasonable, with cocktails around $8 USD and beers around $5 USD.

Note: Cash is king here but they do also accept transfers via Venmo, Cash App, PayPal and Revolut.

Busy

Kon Tiki’s novelty and location make it popular with both locals and visitors. When cruise ships are in, expect the beach to be busy and a short wait for the shuttle out to the floating bar.

Accessibility

You can reach the floating bar by walking along Dickenson Bay or parking near the pick-up point and walking a couple of minutes to the sand. You’ll take a short shuttle/ferry to the platform and step aboard. The final dismount from the boat can be a little shaky, so anyone less steady on their feet should take care.

Restrooms

There are no public toilets on Dickenson Bay beach or on the floating bar. If needed, you’ll have to purchase something from a beachfront restaurant to use their facilities.

Exploring Antigua's Pro Tips

Fun

For the best time, go with a few friends or ‘new found’ holiday friends. Alternatively, if you’ve just arrived and traveling solo there are usually always people there looking for a good time.

On a boat? If you’ve chartered a small power boat, you can pull up for a mid-cruise drink, just ask your captain to swing by to check the vibes.

Sunset

Whilst the bar does close around 6pm it’s worth sticking around for sunset as you get some great sunsets from this side of the island. If you do, bring some insect repellent or a cover up, as sand flies and mosquitoes will definitely be waiting for you back on shore as the sun goes down.

Sunblock & Environment

Friendly reminder to wear sunblock. UV rays hit hard in Antigua. Trust me, you will still get a tan using factor 30+ and believe me when I tell you a golden brown looks a lot better than flakey red when you get back to the office haha. With that being said, please try to wear reef safe sunblock and apply it a short while before getting into the water. Along with many other islands, Antigua and Barbuda’s reefs are damaged from all the chemicals we bring into the water so all measure to prevent this are much appreciated.

Safety

Antigua and Barbuda are generally safe islands, but it's always wise to take precautions to ensure a worry-free vacation. Avoiding leaving valuables unattended on the beach, as opportunistic theft can occur. Additionally, while Dickenson Bay Beach is generally a busy beach, the area of beach where the boat picks you up from gets pretty quiet towards sunset. It would be best to air on the side of caution if you plan to stay there for sunset. In general, avoid visiting beaches at night unless it's part of an organised event or activity.
